![]() ![]() Nucky and the other powerful men represent the worst of that and leave a cycle of violence in their wake. The show is about the hollowness of the American capitalist dream, how we try to fill the holes inside of us through acquisition. One of the many themes of the show is the way the women characters must constantly make difficult decisions simply for survival, fighting for scraps while the male characters are constantly throwing more on their plates than they could ever finish. Conversely, she also thinks it's only sex she has to offer men and does her best to use that to her advantage. She's holding on to a very childish and traditional image of romance in many ways, particularly the story she tells Roy on the boardwalk. You see this in the way she acts out her romantic fantasies. He knowingly gave a 13-year-old orphan who trusted him over to a grown, powerful man who raped her and Gillian, understandably, never moved past this in many ways. He's always reaching for a little more at the extreme cost of human life. The whole show, nothing is ever enough for Nucky. It was: provide for his family and keep his soul or sell his soul to enter the endless chase for more. I really think you're misinterpreting the stakes. ![]() Which makes the series all the more impressive when you consider it all stems from Nucky’s original sin of allowing Gillian to fall into the Commodore’s arms. The list goes on and on and it has led me to realize that Gillian really is the central antagonist of the series. She then has the gall to take it out on Richard when Tommy sees graphic sex in his own home. During this time she also kills an innocent man for a house and raises her grandson in a whorehouse. She intentionally stokes the war between Gyp and Nucky which directly kills innocent people in the bombing and many in that struggle afterwards. She pushes Jimmy to turn on Nucky, which i turn killed countless in the war and got Angela murdered, then gets Jimmy killed. She essentially pushes Jimmy into the army which destroys Jimmy’s path in life. Yes, she had a very traumatic childhood, but in her vengeance she destroyed the lives of everyone around her, including her son and grandson. Not sure how most on this sub feel about her but after many rewatches I cannot find a reason to forgive Gillian. We will joyfully swing the banhammer for such behavior.Įxample (#s "They drink beer!")
